DESCRIPTION:Artown’s Encore Series continues with a performance by Cécile McLorin Salvant on Tuesday\, May 6 at the Harlan O. & Barbara R. Hall Recital Hall in Reno starting at 7:30pm. \nCécile McLorin Salvant\, is a composer\, singer\, and visual artist. The late Jessye Norman described Salvant as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality\, which light up every note she sings.” \nSalvant has developed a passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville\, blues\, theater\, jazz\, baroque and folkloric music. Salvant is an eclectic curator\, unearthing rarely recorded\, forgotten songs with strong narratives\, interesting power dynamics\, unexpected twists\, and humor. \n \nSalvant won the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010. She has received three consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for “The Window”\, “Dreams and Daggers”\, and “For One To Love”\, and was nominated for the award in 2014 for her album “WomanChild”. \nIn 2020\, Salvant received the MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award. Nonesuch Records released “Ghost Song” in March 2022\, and has since gone onto receive two Grammy Nominations as well as appearing on a number of year end best lists for 2022. DESCRIPTION:The TNC River Fork Ranch Preserve is pleased to announce a new Dharma Zephyr sitting group: River Fork Sangha.   The sangha will meet at the Nature Conservancy’s River Fork Ranch Preserve in Minden at 381 Genoa Lane.  It will be a peer-led group facilitated by Jon Weedn on each Saturday in May from 8:30am to 9:30am. \n \nFind peace and community in nature through weekly practice in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. DESCRIPTION:Attention jazz fans!  The 63rd annual Reno Jazz Festival will take place from April 24 through 26.  Hosted by the University of Nevada’s Reno School of the Arts\, this event features more than 300 school groups and about 9\,000 participants.  The activities include school group performances\, day clinics and day concerts. \nParticipants get to attend a series of concerts\, workshops and clinics.  Audiences will enjoy professional jazz musicians\, instructors and student performers.  Registered groups perform 55-minute selections before renowned artist educators and receive on-the-spot coaching and feedback immediately afterward. \nThe concerts start at 5:00pm; it is suggested to arrive 30 minutes early! \n \nSaturday\, April 27: Artist Educator Spotlight Concert \nThe Festival Pass wristband entitles participants and attendees to daytime activities from 8:00am to 5:00pm.   The passes will be available in March; there is a choice of a 1-day or 2-day.  Discounted group passes may be purchased through March 31. \nFor information on ticket prices\, parking and more about this 3-day festival\, visit https://www.unr.edu/jazz-festival
