SUMMARY:World Human Powered Speed Challenge – Battle Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the annual World Human Speed Challenge (WHPSC) this September.  The WHPSC welcomes racers from over 14 different countries and is broadcast to millions of viewers worldwide. \nThe hours are 8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm September 8 through 14! \nOn the tabletop flats of SR305\, south of Battle Mountain\, the world’s fastest humans from around the world\, including Australia\, Canada\, England\, France\, Italy\, Japan\, Mexico\, Netherlands\, Russia and Scotland will attempt to break current land speed records—on a bike. \n  \nHighway SR305 just south of town possesses the unique traits necessary for these highly engineered bicycles to achieve top speeds. \n\nHighway SR305 just south of town possesses the unique traits necessary for these highly engineered bicycles to achieve top speeds.\nThe 4\,619 ft (1408 m) altitude road allows riders an acceleration zone of over 4 miles\, enabling bikes to reach their maximum velocity before being timed over a 200-meter distance.\n\n\nTo understand these bikes\, forget the one in your garage. For the most part\, these cycles are reclining recumbents\, with the pedals and gears way out front.\n\n\nRiders are wedged into fiberglass or other composite shells that are only as wide as their shoulders. To keep the speed bike as aerodynamic and as low as possible\, a few designs eliminate windshields.\n\n\nRiders steer by looking at a TV monitor about the size of a recipe card.\n\n\nHandlebars are just that: wide enough for two hands\, with compact controls for gears and brakes.\n\n\nRiders are sealed into the aerodynamic wedges with tape. Faring’s cover the rider and all but one or two inches of bike tire\, usually there is only one small opening for a breathing tube and a cigar sized opening for the camera lens.\n\nSpectators are Welcome! Bleachers are located at the timing traps for maximum speed thrills\, or those curious about the riders and vehicles can wait in the “catch” area to see the racers assisted from their speed bikes. \n  \nAs part of the weeklong event there is a Show & shine day at the Battle Mountain Civic Center on Tuesday.  Students\, teachers and members of the public are invited to this meet and greet with some of the participants and their bikes. \nAdditionally\, drag races are held on Friday at noon by the High School parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for one of the most exciting food competitions of the year – the Best in The West Nugget Rib Cook-Off starting Wednesday\, August 28 and finishing on Monday\, September 2. \n \nThis annual Labor Day Weekend event is often referred to as the Super Bowl of rib competitions on the national BBQ competition circuit.  Spanning more than 6 city blocks in the heart of downtown Sparks\, two dozen of the country’s best BBQ teams competed for nearly $20\,000 in prize money plus prestigious bragging rights! \n \nIt is estimated that 350\,000 to 400\,000 BBQ enthusiasts take part of the festivities each year consuming more than 250\,000 pounds of mouthwatering ribs during the 6-day festival. \nIn addition to the best BBQ around\, a wide variety of activities are offered including a huge arts and crafts vendor show\, kids area\, VIP area and top named entertainment performing on two stages. There is no admission fee and the event is open to the public. \n \nThe event will be held at the Victorian Square in Sparks on Victorian Avenue between 14th Street and Pyramid Way.  The hours are 10:30am to 9:00pm Wednesday through Sunday and 10:30am to 5:00pm on Monday. \nFor more information\, visit https://nuggetribcookoff.com
