Goldfield
Many people don’t know that Gem Field even exists; it’s easy to drive right past as you head out or into Goldfield.
This awesome rockhounding mecca is an amazing place to search for gems of all types – butterscotch and rose Opalites, purple Chalcedony, green Jadite and red Jasper. Our pictures will give you a good idea of what to look for.
Even if you’re not a “pro rockhounder,” you can still have fun and find beautiful rocks by just wandering around the area. You’ll also have the opportunity to see wildlife – burros, hawks and even antelope.
A 4-wheel drive is highly recommended or high-clearance vehicle, especially if you want to get to some of the upper digging areas.
As you go up the 4-mile drive to the field, watch for the “Y” in the road and make sure you veer to the left. There is a small sign, but, occassionally “someone” takes it down (the culprit could be the Goldfield Ghost or a hungry burro).
If you are going to rockhound, bring gloves, a pickaxe, rock hammer, bucket, safety eye protection, hat, sunscreen and wear very good walking or hiking shoes. It’s also recommended to wear long pants – you need to use caution and watch out for rattlesnakes… and other venomous critters!
Be sure to bring lots of water and some snacks with you. And, remember, you’re at over at over 5,000 feet above sea level… if you’re not accustomed to the high altitude, take it easy and make frequent breaks.
On your way out, at the instruction sign, there’s a weigh scale so you can see how many pounds of rocks you may be bringing home. We advise sending your contribution via Zelle, paypal or mail instead of leaving it in the drop box.
Have a great time, enjoy the views and beautiful treasures you will find!
