Churchill County Museum – Fallon

Fallon

About

The Churchill County Museum, known as the best little museum on Hwy 50, is conveniently located at 1050 S. Maine Street in the heart of Fallon.  The museum has permanent, temporary and virtual exhibits in addition to events, such as the knitting and crochet group, and lecture series.

One of their most popular exhibits allows visitors to see some of the items discovered in the Hidden Cave from around 3,800 years ago. Use the kiosk to see this prehistoric archaeological site within the Grimes Point Archaeological area.

Learn about the Toi-Ticutta and Stillwater Paiute cultures, prominent families and individuals and the trends from 1850 to 1900.  The annex with the transportation collection is amazing along with the many historic artifacts throughout the museum.

A historical tidbit for history buffs: the museum used to be a Safeway store.  In 1967, Marget and Alex Oser purchased the Safeway building that had been at the Maine street location for 10 years.  They donated it to the county and local volunteers began collecting artifacts for their new museum.  The opening ceremony for the Churchill County Museum was held on July 4, 1968.

Admission is FREE, however, please leave a donation – the volunteers have done and continue to do an amazing job of providing historic treasures.  The museum is open Tuesday through Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm (except December through February when it closes at 4:00pm). Be sure to visit the gift shop for a special souvenir!
