Military Might & More

Hawthorne is a small town approximately 130 miles southeast of Reno.  Its economy has been closely tied to the military presence and the Hawthorne Army Depot, in addition to mining and agriculture.

It is just 12 miles North on Hwy 95 to Walker Lake where outdoor recreation includes fishing, boating, hiking, hunting (except for bighorn sheep) and camping in the surrounding desert terrain.

Another big attraction is the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum that houses a collection of military artifacts, equipment and ordnance items related to the history of the Hawthorne Army Depot.  Admission is free and it’s well worth the visit!

The Hawthorne Army Depot is one of the largest ammunition facilities in the world; if the military shoots it or blows it up, at least one example is stored here.  It covers a vast area and has been a key installation for the U.S. military.  Due to the sensitive nature of the materials stored, it is heavily guarded and not open to the public.

The town also hosts community events and festivals.

Hawthorne came into existence because of the activities of the Carson & Colorado Railroad at the beginning of the 1880s.  In 1890, the first official census showed about 337 people and in 1900 there were 436.  It was established as a support and supply center for nearby mining operations; however, it never enjoyed a “boom.”

In 1930, Hawthorne experienced significant growth during World War II when the U.S. Army established the Hawthorne Army Depot.   It played a crucial role in the storage and demilitarization of ammunition and explosives.

To this day, the Hawthorne Army Depot is a highly secret military operation with no public access.  However, the town itself, is charming and pleasant to visit!
