Boulder City
The small, charming town of Boulder City is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The Bureau of Reclamation built a new community, Boulder City, to provide accommodations to support the workers and executive families during the dam’s construction.
The Hoover Dam is the city’s biggest attraction, it’s amazing engineering feat has made it one of the 7 wonders of the modern world; and over 40 million people have taken a guided tour since 1937.
Visitors can explore Boulder City’s historic district, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Veteran’s Memorial Park and Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum. There are only a few of the original still standing buildings, such as the Stephen R. Whitehead home on North Seventh Street built in 1929; these buildings reflect the attractive southwestern “mission revival” style.
For golfers, the Cascata par-72 Rees Jones designed, 18-hole golf course is nestled against the river mountain range.
Boulder City is known for its rich history, low crime rate and distinct absence of gambling. In the 1930s, the city developed the concept of community planning and banned saloons and other forms of entertainment – “gambling”! Boulder City is one of only two places in Nevada where gambling is prohibited; the other is the town of Panaca.
Boulder City also has outdoor activities such as hiking and boating in nearby Lake Mead. There’s a lot to see — so plan well in advance to see what attractions you want to fit into your itinerary! You can purchase tickets for the Hoover Dam tours online. Also, it’s a good idea to make campground and any RV reservations ahead of time, too.
